The Kollektive Treptow Ateliers are evidently facing challenges as they receive only little support. The available indication suggests that certain external factors or circumstances are not beneficial to the studios, and they experience hardly any effective help. This situation implies that the continued existence or successful work of the artists' community is potentially complicated. Although the precise circumstances or the source of this lack of helpfulness are not elaborated upon, the core message is a problematic situation for this Berlin-based studio collective. This highlights the need for more support to ensure their creative work. https://www.treptow-ateliers.de/post/taz---wenig-hilfreich-für-kollektive
The delegation from Treptow Ateliers, comprised of outstanding artists, visited the Berlinale hoping to meet Helen Mirren and draw attention to their difficult situation. However, Mirren preferred to dedicate her attention to ordinary fans, which the Ateliers considered her mistake and a missed opportunity. Although this “faux pas” only partially delivered the desired media attention, the artists still had a lot of fun. Undistributed flyers are now available online to further highlight their situation.
The Professional Association of Visual Artists Berlin (bbk berlin) supports the Treptow Ateliers' efforts to secure the vacant school at Wilhelminenhofstraße 90a in Oberschöneweide as a long-term studio house. In an open letter, bbk praises the artist collective's constructive endeavors and highlights the severe shortage of studios in Berlin, which the existing Senate studio program does not adequately address. The bbk views this as a forward-looking example of how state-owned properties can be more quickly activated for artistic infrastructure. In the future, studios are to be allocated transparently and verifiably to professional artists, managed by a joint committee.
The magazine "Forum" features the Treptow Ateliers on Mörikestraße in its current issue as an exemplary report on Berlin's studio situation. The article, which is also available online, highlights the Treptow Ateliers as an important example. Furthermore, the issue includes an interview with Berlin's studio commissioner, Martin Schwegmann, where the studio building is also discussed. This interview is also accessible online, facilitating access to the information.
On July 7, a Spanish-language video reportage by AFP TV about the Treptow Ateliers in Mörikestraße was adopted by four different Spanish-speaking news portals. These platforms, including Gestión, msn, dailymotion, and att.net, disseminated the report. The reportage highlights the activities of the Treptow Ateliers, reaching a broad audience through these channels.
In Berlin, artists, particularly those at the Treptow Ateliers, are fighting impending displacement due to soaring rents and real estate development. Around thirty creatives at the Treptow Ateliers must vacate by March 2020, as the building is slated for replacement by a new complex. Although the owner plans new workshops, artists fear gentrification, higher costs, and the loss of their community and Berlin's alternative cultural identity. Approximately 350 artist studios close annually in Berlin. Artists demand the use of unused state-owned properties as affordable workspaces to counteract this trend and preserve Berlin's art scene.
The Treptow Ateliers on Mörikestraße recently received a visit from the Berliner Zeitung, where a critical conflict with the owner was indicated. It is emphasized that the owner's statements and actions do not align. The ateliers are considered one of Berlin's threatened cultural spaces. Their endangerment was also mentioned in an article about the continued existence of Rockhaus Lichtenberg. https://www.treptow-ateliers.de/post/das-was-der-eigentümer-sagt-und-was-er-tut-sind-zwei-verschiedene-paar-schuhe
Last Thursday, taz reported on the Treptow Ateliers studio building and the general situation on the Berlin studio market. This marked the first time that the house owner, Peter Ottmann, gave an interview to the press. The article thus offers new insights into the specific situation of the studio building as well as the broader challenges for artists' studios in Berlin. Interested readers can access the full report online on the taz website.
The newspaper "Berliner Woche" published a report on January 10th concerning a worrying development regarding the Treptow Ateliers. The article addressed the threatened demolition of the building referred to as "our studio house," which is part of this artists' complex. This news sheds light on the precarious situation and the uncertain future of the studios located there. The "Berliner Woche" publication thus draws attention to the serious threat to these creative workspaces.
The Tagesspiegel reported on December 17, 2018, about the threatened demolition of the Treptow Ateliers. The edition from the same date included an interview with artist Lydia Paasche, who spoke on this important topic. The article highlights the critical situation of the ateliers and was last updated on February 9, 2019.
On December 5th, Katalin Gennburg, a member of the Berlin House of Representatives for DIE LINKE, visited the artist's house Treptow Ateliers. She gathered information about the situation on site and offered useful tips. Afterwards, Gennburg expressed her support on Facebook, writing: "Many thanks for the insights and fists up, I'm fighting with you!" She emphasized that this production site is of great importance for Berlin, Treptow, and "Baume" and its preservation must be made clear.
The RBB Abendschau recently addressed the "death of ateliers" in Berlin, featuring the Treptow Ateliers in Mörikestraße as an illustrative example. Artists like Lorcan O'Byrne, Sebastian Körbs, and Lydia Paasche reported on the problems arising from studio terminations. Subsequently, Berlin's studio commissioner, Dr. Martin Schwegmann, answered questions from the moderators to discuss the precarious situation of artists in the capital. The report highlighted the urgency of the situation for the local art scene.
